Make a Gift

change a life by supporting a 6th Form Scholarship

donate now

We already offer bursaries, but in a first for the school, we’re asking our parents, friends and alumni community to come together to fund a new scholarship for our sixth form. It’s being created to enable a day girl from the local area to attend Harrogate Ladies’ College, at a critical time, as she studies for her A levels.

The scholarship aims to remove all the barriers that stand in the way of an exceptional girl from a local, low-income family attending the College:

  • The scholarship will cover the full cost of fees for two years, plus an additional 15% to cover additional expenses, including uniform and school meals.
  • Candidates will go through the usual admissions process, including the standard entrance assessment and scholarship paper. In addition, they’ll be asked to complete an application form outlining their future ambitions and reasons for wanting to attend the College.
  • A representative from the HCU will be invited to be part of the selection committee.

The total cost of the two-year scholarship is £40,000 and any gift could have a huge impact on a girl’s life.

SMALL HALL REFURBISHMENT Project

Thank you so much to everyone who donated to the Small Hall Refurbishment Project – we have now reached our target.

Your generosity ensures we can start the refurbishment of this much-loved and much-used space so that generations to come can continue to flourish in theatre, drama or arts performances – a key part of what makes the school so special.

Before the 1960s, this space was known as the Gymnasium. Once the current Assembly Hall was built in the late 1950s, gymnastics, rope climbing, vaulting and other activities were moved to there, and the ‘Small Hall’, as it became known, was instead used for productions and performances.

Work will start very soon on the refurbishment of the Small Hall and we can’t wait to share the progress with you.

Leaving a Legacy

Why

We deeply appreciate those intend to give a legacy gift to the school. Even a small pledge in your Will will make a valuable impact beyond your lifetime; an investment in the future of the school and those who pass through it. A legacy can also enable those who wish to make a larger donation, at a level that wouldn’t otherwise be possible during their life.

Legacies are exempt from inheritance tax so could reduce the tax burden on your family, whilst maximising the benefit of the gift to the school.

Where

Generally, gifts are given as ‘unrestricted’ so that they may be used where they are most needed; this usually goes towards developing the school’s estate and facilities and gives us flexibility when planning future developments. However, please speak to us if you have a specific preference or passion that you would like to support and we would be very happy to discuss your wishes and how we can accommodate them.

How

If you would like to leave a gift in your Will, please speak to your solicitor who can advise on which type of legacy is right for you. This may be a Reversionary, Residuary, Conditional, Pecuniary or non-monetary legacy. If you already have a Will they will add your wishes using a Codicil supplement, or you can re-draft a new Will if necessary.

It greatly helps with the school’s future planning if you could inform us of your intent too; this also enables us to thank you properly. Be reassured that a legacy gift is a pledge and not binding, so if your circumstances change you can alter your Will.

Thank you for considering leaving a gift to Harrogate Ladies’ College. If you would like to discuss your Legacy, please call 01423 537029 or email hcu@hlc.org.uk
