The trip was the third to be undertaken by Highfield as part of an on-going project to support a school in the village of Bombo which they initially helped to build. Vital sponsorship of the local children enables them to receive an education, food and healthcare at the school.

The two-week trip began with a guided tour of the bustling capital, Kampala before travelling to the village of Bombo where Highfield teachers led maths activities in the classrooms which their Ugandan counterparts observed. Pupils also spent time with the children they sponsor, visiting their homes and meeting their families.

The trip was rounded off with a safari at Murchison Falls on the River Nile where the children learnt about the wildlife, geography and history of the region.

Mrs Tracy, a parent from Harrogate who went on the trip with her son said,

“I can’t even begin to explain how amazing this whole experience was! It was a thoroughly life changing trip.”

James Savile, Head of Highfield Prep School said,

“Highfield’s link with the school in Bombo not only helps the families in Uganda but also develops our children’s understanding of cultures and communities whose lives are a world away from their own. It’s key to our overall ethos at Highfield and sometimes, the lessons learnt outside of the school are the most powerful.

“The boys and girls returned from the trip exhausted, but exhilarated by their African adventure. They were bursting with stories that they couldn’t wait to share with the rest of school!

“I’m incredibly proud of the children and of the school for enabling them to have this invaluable experience. We’re already making plans for next year’s trip.”
