Since the 1900s, the philanthropic support of Harrogate Ladies’ College parents, staff and alumni has helped to create a school that fosters and enhances the learning and development of our students both in and beyond the classroom. In the past, donations of musical equipment, refurbished décor and upholstery in libraries and common rooms, chapel pews and auditorium seating, all so generously given by our alumni, ensured we could provide an environment for our pupils to thrive. Thank you to all those who have helped in the past; your support is deeply appreciated.
This tradition of giving, along with effectively managed fee income, is more important than ever to help us deliver the educational facilities and provisions for future generations. If you are able to help in any way, please consider giving a donation. You can choose to support our current major project – the Small Hall Refurbishment Project – or if you prefer, you can give an ‘unrestricted donation, to be used where it is most needed.
If you prefer, you could remember the school in your Will so that you can make a difference in the future without impacting your ability to take care of loved ones. Read below for more information, or get in touch on firstname.lastname@example.org or 01423 537029
SMALL HALL REFURBISHMENT Project
Attention has turned to the Small Hall, a venue for many drama and arts performances over the years. Maintenance on the floor, walls, and repairs to lighting and doors will restore this space to its former glory. The vast timber floor will be sanded and re-varnished, and blackout roller blinds will replace the curtains to allow natural light during the day. We are calling on your generosity to help us raise £10,000 for this project.
Before the 1960s, this space was known as the Gymnasium; the picture above shows it as it was in the 1920s. Once the current Assembly Hall was built in the late 1950s, gymnastics, rope climbing, vaulting and other activities were moved to there, and the ‘Small Hall’, as it became known, was instead used for productions and performances.
Any amount you could donate would be a huge help. Perhaps you want to ask for donations in lieu of a birthday gift, to celebrate a special anniversary, or remember someone special. Or maybe a group of you want to celebrate a particularly memorable production with a donation. As well as receiving our sincere gratitude, donors will be listed in the Small Hall on a special artwork created by pupils and credited on the College website (unless you prefer to remain anonymous), and receive updates on the refurbishment work.

Leaving a Legacy
We deeply appreciate those intend to give a legacy gift to the school. Even a small pledge in your Will will make a valuable impact beyond your lifetime; an investment in the future of the school and those who pass through it. A legacy can also enable those who wish to make a larger donation, at a level that wouldn’t otherwise be possible during their life.
Legacies are exempt from inheritance tax so could reduce the tax burden on your family, whilst maximising the benefit of the gift to the school.
Generally, gifts are given as ‘unrestricted’ so that they may be used where they are most needed; this usually goes towards developing the school’s estate and facilities and gives us flexibility when planning future developments. However, please speak to us if you have a specific preference or passion that you would like to support and we would be very happy to discuss your wishes and how we can accommodate them.
If you would like to leave a gift in your Will, please speak to your solicitor who can advise on which type of legacy is right for you. This may be a Reversionary, Residuary, Conditional, Pecuniary or non-monetary legacy. If you already have a Will they will add your wishes using a Codicil supplement, or you can re-draft a new Will if necessary.
It greatly helps with the school’s future planning if you could inform us of your intent too; this also enables us to thank you properly. Be reassured that a legacy gift is a pledge and not binding, so if your circumstances change you can alter your Will.
Thank you for considering leaving a gift to Harrogate Ladies’ College. If you would like to discuss your Legacy, please call 01423 537029 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
