Subjects

Harrogate Ladies’ College prides itself on the wide range of subjects it offers to its pupils.

In Bankfield, our pre-prep department, the focus is on “areas of learning and development”.  They are currently defined in the statutory directions issued by the Government – which all pre-prep schools, whether maintained or not, have to follow as:

  • Personal, social and emotional development;
  • Communication, language and literacy;
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world;
  • Physical development;
  • Creative development.

In Highfield, our junior or prep department, subject areas as traditionally defined begin to emerge from the Reception stage.  At first, most of a child’s time is spent with her or his class teacher, but all major areas of the curriculum are covered.  In the last years of this junior stage of education, subject specialisation is introduced, both in terms of timetabling and teaching.

In College, our girls’ only day/boarding 11-18 section, the curriculum in the first three years is deliberately broad, allowing girls to gain knowledge and skills in traditional academic subjects, including a range of modern languages and Latin, and creative aspects of learning.  PE and games are also an important part of a girl’s weekly timetable.  At GCSE, we have a wide choice of subjects, beyond a core of Mathematics, English Language and Literature, Science (either Dual Award or three separate sciences), a modern language and a humanities subject.  The range of subjects offered at Advanced Level in the Sixth Form is impressively wide.
