Last Friday we enjoyed two wonderful sessions with gospel singer Geraldine Latty. After school, the Chapel Choir were transformed into a gospel choir within minutes by Geraldine‟s enthusiastic coaching! She was interested to hear the Choir sing some of their own repertoire first, and then we launched into three part harmony for some traditional and contemporary gospel songs. Once we were singing confidently, Geraldine improvised over the top with her fabulous gospel voice. Geraldine‟s friend Carey Luce, an accomplished multi- instrumentalist, accompanied throughout the evening on piano and drums.
After a break for supper, we moved into an open session with nearly 100 participants of all ages. I think we were all amazed by how good we sounded, and how quickly we were all stomping, clapping and singing in perfect harmony! Geraldine interspersed the singing with some fascinating background on the roots of gospel music, her own stories, and the importance of hope when things get tough.
I think it is safe to say that it was a powerful and moving experience for everyone.
