The competition, run by Young Writers, invited school children from across the country to compose a poem around the theme of Winter Wonderland.  Poems were selected for publication based on perception, imagination, expression and creative use of language.

Winning entries, including 25 from Harrogate Ladies’ College have been published in an anthology called Icy Delights.  A copy of the book will be kept at the British Library and libraries across the UK, providing lasting record of the winning entries.

Teresa Long, who is an English Teacher at the school and co-ordinated the pupils entries into the competition said,

“Creative writing is really important in the development of young people.  It helps develop inquisitiveness, encourages pupils to be open to new ideas and possibilities and builds communication skills.”

“The poems written by the girls were a fabulous demonstration of their creative writing skills and of their ability to express themselves.  They should all be really proud of what they’ve achieved.  I hope they enjoy reading their poems in print in years to come!”
