In Highfield, Art and Design Technology have a significant and valuable role to play in the overall ethos of the school. Art and Design is an ongoing process, introduced in the earliest stages of the School through work in art and craft.
Through these activities all the children are given opportunities to develop specific skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to work in a wide variety of media, styles and forms. Working with practical materials in a creative way, with guidance and with given criteria on individual or larger scale group projects, pupils are able to use their imagination to achieve their potential. Themes and topics are carefully selected to be thought provoking and imaginative. They involve drawing, painting, model making and sculpture. As craft becomes recognisable as Design Technology, the children move from their classroom to the Design Technology centre where they produce a wide range of artefacts which can be tested and evaluated.
The art and design work produced by all the children is attractively displayed throughout the School and this enhances the learning environment and reflects the work covered in the curriculum. There are many opportunities throughout the year to share and celebrate the children’s work in assemblies and art competitions. We also encourage visits to exhibitions, galleries and workshops in the local area and further afield.
