Music

HLC Music Department has a thriving extra-curricular programme which aims to offer a wide variety of groups to suit the pupils in the school and therefore enable as many pupils as possible to participate.  Major instrumental concerts are put on twice a year, with many smaller events happening throughout the school year.  The Chapel Choir (see dedicated Choirs page) sings every week in Chapel and there are performances in assembly every Friday.

Orchestra

The orchestra meets for one hour a week and prepares music for concerts and assemblies.  Around thirty girls are involved, with a minimum standard of grade 4.  Highfield pupils may join the orchestra if appropriate.

String Orchestra

The String Orchestra meets for half an hour before the main orchestra rehearsal begins.  It aims to stretch the most able string players.

Junior String Group

The string group meets for one lunchtime slot a week.  The group aims to encourage the less advanced players to develop ensemble skills, in preparation for transfer into the orchestra when appropriate.

Wind Ensemble

The wind ensemble meets for one lunchtime slot a week.  Girls of any standard are encouraged to join.

Flute Ensemble

All flautists are encouraged to join the flute ensemble, which meets on Thursday before morning registration.

Samba Band

Pupils of any age or ability are welcome to join the samba band on Thursday after school.  The group uses percussion to create the rhythms of Latin American music.

Theory Class

Pupils who need to take the grade 5 theory examination are encouraged to attend a weekly class on Wednesday.
