Enrichment Programme
As pupils move to Lower 5 (Year 10) and embark on their (I)GCSE courses, their preparations for Higher Education will begin in earnest. Competition for university places is very intense and we know from feedback from universities that admissions tutors are increasingly looking beyond (I)GCSE and A level grades for something extra – something that describes perhaps more personal interests and hobbies, and demonstrates an individual’s commitment.
A vast number of our pupils are already contributing to this wider picture by playing an instrument, participating in school sports teams or involvement in other activities either in or out of school. In addition to this, we aim to widen our pupils’ horizons further by offering an Enrichment Programme which will enhance their ‘life skills’, giving them the chance to question and analyse beyond the confines of the specifications, and open their mind to new interests.
All pupils in Lower 5 and Lower 6 (Year 10 and 12) will spend at least one double period each week on Enrichment activities. The Enrichment programme does not clash with any GCSE or AS level subjects.
The current Lower 5 (Year 10) Enrichment Programme consists of four, eight-week self-contained topics covering current affairs, politics, first aid and cookery. The Lower 6 enrichment programme consists of four, eight-week self-contained units covering philosophy, economics, current affairs and cookery.
After summer examinations have been completed, Harrogate Ladies’ College holds an Enrichment Day. Pupils from Upper 3 to Lower 5 (Year 7 to 10) have a day off timetable where they can experience new activities and develop their life skills.
