Physical Education

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.   ~ Plato

The aim of the Physical Education Department is to encourage girls to engage in a range of enjoyable and purposeful activities, working independently or as part of a team, and to become analytical, creative and expressive in the development of their skills.

LOWER SCHOOL (Years 7 – 9)

Lacrosse and netball are the main team sports taught in the Lower School as part of the games programme in the Autumn and Spring Terms.  Alongside the two hours devoted to games, the girls also have a weekly swimming lesson and another lesson which follows a rotation of gymnastics, dance and health related fitness.  The activities change in the Summer Term to rounders, athletics and tennis.

As part of the Lower Four (Year 8 ) curriculum, the girls are taken for a residential weekend to Bewerley Park Outdoor Pursuits Centre where they take part in activities such as gorge walking, abseiling, rock climbing and canoeing as well as a variety of physical and mental problem solving activities.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (Years 10 – 11)

As the girls move into the Middle School, there is more choice on the games programme.  Those who have developed a passion for the major team games can continue to follow the sport of their choice.  However, we realise that lacrosse and netball do not appeal to everyone, so a wider choice is given.  The activities offered include: badminton, volleyball, hockey, basketball and fitness training in the Fitness Suite.

SIXTH FORM (Years 12 – 13)

The Sixth Form has its own activities programme, as we believe that exercise is a vitally important part of a Sixth Former’s life.  The girls have a choice of numerous activities, both competitive and non-competitive.  Activities in this programme include: golf, football, zumba, yoga, aerobics, trampoline and squash as well as some of the more traditional team games.

The Physical Education Department also runs overseas sports tours.  In 2012, the lacrosse players are going to the USA and the netball players and swimmers are flying off to train and compete in Malta.  In addition, the annual ski trip is giving Europe a miss next year and is going to sample the pistes in America instead.
