“Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own.” Goethe
The aim of the Modern Foreign Languages department is to introduce girls to the language and culture of three of our European partners, in order to foster a love of another language and an interest, understanding and tolerance of another culture.
In Upper 3 (Year 7) all three languages, French, German and Spanish are taught. At the end of the year, girls decide which of the two languages we offer they would like to contiue.
The GCSE course in all three languages is based on topics related to everyday life, allowing the development of grammatical accuracy and vocabulary acquisition to take place in a genuine context in which pupils feel secure.
In the Sixth Form, the focus is also firmly on contemporary issues and society. Lessons are often conducted in the language being studied and pupils have a weekly conversation class with our three Language Assistants.
Our extra curricular activities comprise language clubs and world cinema club. Our junior pupils on regular trips to France, Germany and Spain benefit from specific courses at appropriate language schools including the Sauveterre residential experience, whilst our senior pupils develop further skills on foreign work placements.
