Food Technology

“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.” Luciano Pavarotti

The Food Technology department aims to equip the girls with one of life’s key skills. Food and diet are essential to a healthy life. An understanding of the importance of food and its preparation presents an excellent opportunity for learning through practical activities.

On entry to the School, girls follow a three year foundation course which includes nutrition, food choices and the preparation of a range of standard recipes. Every year the Upper 4 girls (Year 9) compete in a national competition judged by James Martin, the celebrity chef. The challenge is to design and make their own recipe from a given set of ingredients.

Food Technology may be chosen as an option at GCSE. Alongside the core elements of preparing a variety of dishes, the girls study nutrition and how to make healthy food choices. They also consider food sourcing, food safety and preservation. Internal Assessment is an important component of the course and focuses on the demonstration of practical skills. During the GCSE course, the girls visit Warburtons’ Bakery to see commercial bread production and develop a different set of cookery and presentation skills at the annual Army Catering master Class at the York Food Festival.

Food Technology is an A level option.

The Food Technology department has been completely refurbished to provide a modern well equipped learning environment.
