“Remember upon the conduct of each depends the fate of all.” Alexander the Great
The study of the classical world is essential to a real understanding of western culture.
Classical Civilisation is currently an A level option and the course has a strong emphasis on both the history and literature of the Greek and Roman worlds. Texts are studied in English translation and provide an insight into aspects of life in each of these empires, including politics, philosophy, religion and poetry.
This subject will appeal to anyone who enjoys English Literature and History. It requires no previous study or knowledge of the classical world, although interest in it is essential. The course is rigorous and challenging, offering the opportunity both to study some of the most famous literature the world has produced and, of course, to engage with philosophical arguments that continue to exercise thinkers everywhere.
