“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso
The Art department aims to provide a creative atmosphere in which girls can develop their own individual ability and expression with a wide variety of materials.
On entry to College, girls follow a three year foundation course which includes drawing, painting, printmaking, creative textiles and pottery. Different periods and styles of Art are studied and ideas are incorporated into pupils’ own work. The annual Art Exhibition is at the end of the summer term when the Headmistress will award her prize and certificates of merit.
In Lower 5 (Year 10) Art may be chosen as an option. The GCSE course allows pupils to develop a range of skills in a variety of media. Their work is stimulated by a thematic approach from a wide range of sources such as still life displays, art history and from contact with visiting artists. Coursework and keeping a sketchbook is an important component of the course, and in Upper 5 (Year 11) a ten hour piece is completed from a theme supplied by the examination board.
Art and Design is a popular choice for A level. Many techniques and disciplines may be used, including drawing and painting, ceramics, etching and photography. The subject gives tremendous opportunities for individuals to develop their own creativity in a disciplined and critically exacting manner.
The Art department places great emphasis on optimising display work from pupils and there are many fine examples of individuals’ work around School. During May and June all examination pupils display their work at the end of their courses.
The specially designed and spacious main studio and pottery room are open to all year groups. Girls are encouraged to come in their free time to develop their projects. Several trips are arranged, and visits are undertaken to local galleries, the annual Knitting and Stitching Show in the Harrogate International Exhibition Centre each November, and London exhibitions.
A level Art students will visit Venice, Italy, for a long weekend to inspire their Upper Sixth (Year 13) work.
