Why HLC?

Why should an 11 year old girl go to Harrogate Ladies’ College, a girls only 11-18 day/boarding school?

Naturally, we believe that there are many reasons why single sex education suits many secondary age girls best.  We also believe that single sex education suits many boys best, but that’s a different story … our beliefs are founded on evidence.

There is little doubt that a girls only school provides secondary age girls with the best possible learning environment and the opportunity to develop their own identities without the pressures that teenage life can bring to bear upon them.

  • The exam results of GSA (Girls’ Schools Association) schools show this.
  • Girls and boys mature at different rates.
  • Girls and boys learn in different ways.
  • HLC allows girls to flourish in a safe environment where they can take risks without the fear of dismissive put-downs.
  • HLC allows girls to develop free from the pressure to conform to sexist, celebrity-orientated patterns of behaviour.
  •  HLC supports and sustains a “can-do” philosophy.
  • HLC ensures that there is no sex stereotyping of subjects or activities.
  •  HLC provides leadership opportunities and models for girls.
  •  HLC provides staff who are expert in teaching girls.
  • Moreover, HLC does not mean a single sex life.  In the world in which we live, there is no complete escape from the male.  However, it is often a great relief for girls to have the space to work and play away from male eyes.

    HLC offers girls every opportunity.
