The Sciences and Vocational Subjects

A grasp of the physical laws and processes governing the planet on which we live is a fundamental requirement of any curriculum. Although we take public examinations seriously we are also keen to engender a genuine fascination for science beyond the confines of the examination specifications.

The Science Department boasts six well equipped laboratories in a separate Science Block. The ten members of staff, in addition to being particularly enthusiastic about their subjects, follow a wide variety of other interests including flying aircraft, riding horses, long distance running, building musical instruments, snow boarding and supporting Burnley Football Club!

Mathematics Why does the vast majority of Sixth formers at HLC choose to join us for 8 or even 16 lessons a week? Well obviously because Maths is beautiful, intriguing, challenging, and fun.

ICT (Information and Communication Technology) The aim of the Department is to ensure that every student becomes confident and competent when using a computer. ICT is a key subject in the academic curriculum and cross-curricular lessons are encouraged. Accounting New from September 2006. This is a traditional GCE A level and will be assessed entirely by examination. It covers accounting techniques and management accounting methods, and is particularly suitable for numerate students with an interest in financial management.

Careers Girls have unlimited access to the Careers Resources Centre and the wealth of materials there. Whilst few decisions are made before Upper 4, it’s never too early for girls to learn where and how to find the information they will need.

Learning Resource Centre (Library) The resources here are too varied for the term Library to be used any longer. CDRoms, internet, newspapers, magazines, books, all are available under the care of a qualified librarian.
