Highfield Prep School
Highfield opened in September 1999 and gives boys and girls, aged 4 -11, an outstanding education within a secure and stimulating environment.
The children are taught in a beautifully refurbished building standing within the College grounds. Furnishings and resources have been meticulously chosen to create colourful, exciting and educationally up-to-date classrooms.
Specialist College facilities are also available to Highfield and the children enjoy such venues as the Swimming Pool, music and drama areas, the College Chapel, the Sports Hall and fields, access to the large College computer network and the general gardens and fenced wildlife ponds.
Small classes (no more than 16) allow our experienced and well qualified staff to give maximum care to the development of each individual.
The children’s welfare and happiness is of paramount importance and whilst encouraging each child to attain the highest academic standards of which he or she is capable, we also encourage good manners and respect for others. By providing a wide and exciting range of activities we develop creativity, social skills and a love of learning.
Whole school inspection confirmed that our academic attainment is higher than the national average.
School Day
Our teaching day starts at 8.50 am and finishes at 3.55 pm.
However, our well structured ‘Before and After School Care’ (8.00 am to 6.00 pm) is extremely popular with busy parents, children wishing to take part in after school activities, pupils wishing to complete homework within school or some just wishing to stay because they love it!
Morning assembly is based on moral messages from the teaching of the Church of England. It is also an opportunity to applaud the children’s good citizenship and various achievements. An awareness of others is encouraged and the children are involved in many charitable projects. Parents are invited to special assemblies.
The College caterers provide all our food requirements: a nutritious lunch is served as a family meal within the main school dining room.
There is a Health Centre on site, manned by qualified nursing staff.
Flexi-boarding is an option in our Junior House (Oakdale), for girls aged 8 years and over. Some just stay for a night or two should the need arise.
Curriculum
Whilst following, and exceeding, the criteria required by the National Curriculum, we are able to enjoy our excellent resources and the flexibility of a wide range of subjects, preparing the children thoroughly for their next step.
Creative arts, physical sports and extra-curricular activities play an important part in the development of the whole child and in further promoting their confidence.
The children all have their own form teacher but have progressively more specialist subject teaching as they go through the school.
Great attention is paid to each individual pupil. Careful assessment of the child’s progress allows constructive target setting relative to that child. Discussion with parents formally and informally is an important part of the process.
Staff
Highfield has its own well qualified and dedicated team of teaching staff, led by the Head of Highfield, Mrs Carole Cameron.
However, with their tremendous breadth of knowledge and experience, the Board of Governors of Harrogate Ladies' College and Mr Geoff Hazell, the Headmaster, fully support Highfield.
There is also an active ‘Parents and Friends of Highfield’ which supports many school ventures and helps foster closer relations between Highfield staff and parents.
