Sport

Every pupil from entering school at 4 years old to leaving at 11 follows a progressive programme of activities aimed at developing physical skill, increasing fitness levels and promoting an enjoyment of sport. The comprehensive range of activities taught covers all areas of the government recommended curriculum and at a more advanced level. The delivery of this programme is enhanced by the school having good facilities, plenty of curriculum time and enthusiastic, experienced specialist Physical Education teachers.

At key Stage 1 in addition to dance, gymnastics and games lessons the pupils have a weekly swimming lesson. As a consequence pupils generally complete this stage of their education able to swim unaided, link key body movements in a creative manner.

On entering Key Stage 2 the focus becomes more specialised to specific sports. Many sports become single sex as pupils are developing the skill levels and strategic awareness to participate in traditional team sports including Netball, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Rounders and Cricket. Swimming and other individual sports namely athletics, tennis and gymnastics continue to be taught and pupils focusing on these areas often reach outstanding standards.

All lessons aim to enhance skill levels and enjoyment regardless of ability. A sweaty smiling face is a common view in a Highfield P.E lesson.
