ART AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
At Highfield Prep. School Art and Design Technology have a significant and valuable role to play in the overall ethos of the school. Art and Design is an ongoing process through which all the children are given opportunities to develop specific skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to work in a wide variety of media, style and form. Working with practical materials in a creative way, pupils are able to use their imagination to achieve their potential with guidance and given criteria on individual or larger scale group projects. Themes and topics are carefully selected to be thought provoking and imaginative and they involve drawing, painting, model making and sculpture. In Design Technology the children learn to manipulate resistant materials and they produce a wide range of artefacts which can be tested and evaluated.
Art and Design is not always taught in isolation and wherever appropriate it is linked to other areas of the curriculum where specific art and design skills can be developed and re-inforced.
The art and design work produced by all the children is attractively displayed throughout the school and this enhances the learning environment and reflects the work covered in the curriculum. There are many opportunities throughout the year to share and celebrate the children’s work in assemblies, inter-school, local and national art competitions and we actively encourage and participate in visits to exhibitions, galleries and workshops in the local area and further afield.
