Lacrosse offers the players more than just a game; it provides the chance to travel, to play on an international level and to be part of successful, yet fun and friendly teams.
Each year, the 1st XII travel up to Scotland for the Scottish Schools Invitation Tournament. In March we travel South to the National Schools Tournament which was held in Dorset this year. In July 2001 the girls went to Canada on a tour in and around Toronto, and Florida was the destination in April 2004. American beckons again in July 2008.
The school can also boast that many players are selected for the Yorkshire squad each year; this year we have a total of 13 playing for the A and B squads. Following county matches, some are selected to represent the North at U19 level, and occasionally we have girls who go on to gain national honours. |

Squash
Squash is also available in our own squash courts. The school runs a squash team consisting of six players selected from the full age range from UIII to the UVI.
However, girls of all ages and abilities can play, and for those who are really keen, the squash courts are opened at specific times after school during the week as well. |

Netball
Netball has become increasingly popular at the College. Each year we enter the Harrogate and District Netball Leagues with U13, U14, U15 teams and all teams will play in Division 1 this season. Starting on September 2007 a new U12 league has been created and we will be hoping our Upper 3s can finish the season in one of the top positions! Practice sessions and matches usually take place on week day lunch-times with matches in the evenings.
Tennis
Tennis is an attractive option for the summer term. The school has eight tennis courts, three of which are "all weather" courts, situated in the beautiful gardens behind the Music House. Personal coaching from Pauline Sharpe (professional coach at Ilkley Tennis Club) is also a popular option for a large number of girls and takes place on Saturday mornings in the Autumn and Spring terms, and during the week in the Summer term. Tennis teams consisting of six from each year group are selected to compete against other local schools both in "friendly" matches and in the HSBC schools tennis competition. |
Rounders
Rounders is a popular sport with all age groups - even the Upper VI! Teams practise during the Summer Term and Juniors have matches most weekends. All the teams this year have been successful, with the U14 team boasting an unbeaten record.
Inter House competitions
Most girls also participate in House activities as inter-house competitions take place towards the end of each term. The following outlines the House Competitions which provide the opportunity for all girls to enjoy competitive sport. |

Athletics provides an opportunity for all girls to excel in some discipline. UIII girls find the first lessons with the javelin, discus and shot quite daunting, but soon establish confidence and good technique. Inter-school fixtures are held in the Summer term and some of the girls go on to represent Harrogate and District in Area Competitions. This year Lauren Bodie was again selected to represent North Yorkshire at the English Schools Championships in the senior girls Shot Putt event.

Swimming
All girls in the first three years have a swimming lesson each week. After this, it is optional. Although swimming is not the main sport at Harrogate Ladies' College, everyone involved takes part with great spirit. There are senior and junior training sessions every week, which contribute to everyone's general fitness as well as improving their technique.
Skiing
Each year a party of girls head for the ski slopes. Girls have tested the pistes in France, Italy and Austria over the last few years. In January 2008 a group of 30 will again go skiing in France to Les Deux Alpes. |
Equestrian Event
Another annual event which has become increasingly popular and well-renowned in the horse world is the Equestrian Team Challenge. Participants compete in the main arena of the Great Yorkshire Show Ground. Here, competitors complete two rounds of show jumping before the best six teams go forward to a jump off. After 10 years of trying the College's senior team qualified for the final in first place and finished a very creditable 5th, following the jump off. |

Fitness Centre
During the summer of 2007 a substantial investment was made by the Parents and Friends of HLC in the Fitness Room. We have installed 3 cycles, 2 treadmills, 2 rowers, a cros body trainer and a stepper. The equipment has proved very popular with the older girls and even the staff!

Outdoor activities
The Lower IV group makes an annual trip to Bewerley Park Outdoor Activities Centre (near Pateley Bridge) where the girls follow a programme of canoeing, caving, gorge walking, abseiling and climbing. Team work and challenges provide the central theme of the weekend. The biggest challenge facing the staff is getting 30+ children into bed and settled before midnight!
