Amateur Radio - click here to find out more...
We
started this club nearly thirty years ago after
a demonstration of the hobby by two members of
staff and a parent who held licences.
Amateur Radio is a technical hobby combining
communication skills with basic electronics and
unlike CB, requires at least a pass at
Foundation examination level in order to qualify
for a transmitting licence. Many lecturers
in University science departments hold licences
as it was often the hobby which excited their
love of Physics and Electronics, hence it
commonly becomes a talking point when our girls
go for University interview.
Over the years
we have had several direct contacts with Amateurs on
Space missions including MIR, the Space Shuttle and
the International Space Station. Although no
longer compulsory, several girls also learn Morse
Code as an extra skill as it is an international
mode of communication.
Classes leading
to the examination have been run each year and to
date more than one hundred and fifty girls have
received their callsigns. The highlight of the
year is our annual twenty four hour station in June
when we try to break the previous records for the
number of contacts made and countries worked. |
