Lower School Core Curriculum

If you become an archaeologist you will have to have knowledge of a number of academic areas AND be prepared to be practical, to dig and scrape, to brush and wash. You will work as a team, some having expert knowledge of textiles, others of pottery. All of you will have to spend time on foundations.

Foundations are what this booklet is about. In the first three years of secondary school you will explore new subject areas, go more deeply into core subjects already familiar from Prep or Primary school, learn new methods of working, possibly with more advanced equipment and develop your interests in a range of extra-curricular areas.

You may need to download a free PDF reader such as Acrobat Reader. From the moment you enter HLC a team of dedicated teachers will look after you in terms of pastoral care. Your subject teachers will lead you through the various syllabuses we follow. From time to time your progress will be assessed, within school and by both “Midyis” and “Yellis”, programs especially designed for independent schools and administered by the University of Durham. The information produced will help you to progress academically and to choose between options – though at this level these are few. In any case our policy is to enable you to keep your options OPEN for as long as possible so that the eventual choice between archaeology and, say, art history, is delayed and made on the best possible bases.

So – welcome to our own archaeological site. Explore it with interest and determination. Dig away at all that it offers. Discover and develop your own treasure hoard, whether it be academic or sporting or both. We at HLC are ready to give you the tools…so let’s get going!
