 HLC (I)GCSE GIRLS FLY!

We are thrilled to be celebrating an excellent set of (I)GCSE results at Harrogate Ladies’ College today. Over 61% of all grades attained were at A* to A grade, which is 5% higher than in 2010. Almost 20% of girls gained A* and A grades in every examination they took.

Amelia Horne, Alice Barber and Sophie Ashley achieved an outstanding 10A*s each. Other impressive performers were Rebecca Knight (9A* 1A), Elizabeth Callinan (8A* 2As), Sophie Goose (7A* 3A), Subin Kim (7A* 1A), Heather Kirk (6A* 5A), Nkechi Uwaezuoke (6A* 4A) and Kathryn Barnhill (3A* 6A).

Mrs Wilkinson commented “I am delighted by the girls’ results today. This year group was the largest Upper 5 cohort the School has ever had and there are some notable performances. Many in the year have worked exceptionally hard to attain the best grades they can. Significantly, the great majority of this group are staying on into our Lower 6 in September. I anticipate they will do very well in time, across the breadth of our Sixth Form curriculum. I also look forward to seeing them flourish in all aspects of school life. Their commitment to A levels at HLC is testament to their confidence in the benefits of single-sex education for girls in the secondary years.”

A level Results 2011

HLC is thrilled to announce another excellent set of A level results. 79% of all grades were at A*, A or B, narrowly short of our best ever performance of 81% at A* to B in 2010. Exactly half of the grades attained by the Upper Sixth were at A* to A which is 2% higher than last year.

This will be a particularly tough year for university entrance places and we are delighted that the significant majority of our girls have secured their first or second choice institution. They are primarily taking up places at Russell Group or other top universities such as Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Imperial, LSE, Oxford, UCL and Warwick to study a broad range of subjects including Chemical Engineering, Economics English and History, Geography, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Philosophy and French.

Particular achievements were those of Jessie Yu (3 A* 1A), Lucy Welch (2A* 2A) and Dorothy Lui (2A* 3A).  Emily Lightowlers has already taken up her place at Purdue, USA which is 106th in the THES table of world-ranked universities in 2010-2011.  In a climate of increasing university choice and cost, HLC aims to become a centre of expertise for international university applications and to support students to look more globally for their university education.

Mrs Rhiannon Wilkinson, Headmistress says ‘’these wonderful results are testament to the girls’ hard work and dedication, the quality of the teaching and the outstanding provision of pastoral care they receive at HLC. Many of our top performers were also fully committed to the wider life of the School and have been extremely successful in a wide range of areas ranging from top level lacrosse to stunning performances in the Chapel Choir and the recent production of Sound of Music.

‘’Equally’’, Mrs Wilkinson says, ‘’it is important to applaud the very real achievements of Upper Sixth girls who have worked very hard to gain the best results they can.’’

Everyone at HLC congratulates last year’s Upper Sixth on their success and wishes the girls good fortune as they move on to the next stage of their lives.
